Book Report

In school, I did a book report on the book "The Story of Alexander the Great". This book is written by Sofia Zarabouka, a famous Greek Author, it was written in Greek but then translated into English and published. Also, this book has many very colorful and overall nice drawings including the portrait of Alexander the Great as the front cover. I wrote about many things on my book report chart: setting, characters, awards that the book won (or should have) won. This book is about the life of Alexander the Great- where he was born, his childhood, how he chose his horse, how a man murdered his father and he became king and all about his famous conquering of Persia, India and other countries. He was a brilliant tactical leader and never lost a battle, he was even called "Master of Asia". First, he took many men (i think about 10, 000) and set out for Asia instead of his father (who was murdered a little while before). He first fought against Persian King Darius (2 or 3rd) and conquered almost all of Persia. Darius' friends murdered him in his sleep when they thought they lost (they did). In every outpost, he left a garrison to rule it. Next, he conquered Egypt and he built a city which is named after him: Alexandria, he also conquered India and some other countries. He died in Babylon because of a sickness. Overall, he was a brilliant military general (leader), was a smart man and is still known today because he let the people he conquered have their own beliefs and he even changed along the way. (This is a picture of my book report, it is the one on brown paper.)

Summary of the Egypt Game

This is mine and Oguze's summary of the book that we read in literature circles "The Egypt Game"

Summary of "The Egypt Game"

This book is about how a girl named April who came to a large university town in California, how she met her new best friend and how they discovered what would become "The Egypt Game". First, April's mother Dorothea goes on a tour (she's a singer) and sends April to her grandmother (father's mom). Her grandmother lives in a building called "Casa Rosada", April came from Hollywood, and she acts like she is very famous and doesn’t appreciate the people around her and becomes very arrogant, but she then changes. Also, in the same house lives the Ross family, the Rosses have a girl, Melanie (same age as April) and a boy named Marshall (he is 4 but speaks very clearly and is extremely smart). April meets Melanie and they become best friends, they share an interest (all their free time they devote for making up new games) and with Melanie April changes characteristics and now she is more friendly. One day they discover a backyard filled up with interesting old stuff and they start rearranging it and that is how the Egypt Game was born. Soon they come up with a lot of new games and ceremonies, they involve Marshall in them. After some time a new girl comes to Casa Rosada, her family is poor, her father recently died and her name is Elisabeth. Although April and Melanie don't want anyone to join "The Egypt Game", they decide they can accept Elizabeth. Next some terrible things happen in their town, a girl was found murdered in their neighborhood. This sent a wave of terror throughout parents and all outdoor games had to be cancelled. During that period of time the members of the Egypt Game were making costumes (Egyptian costumes) at Casa Rosada. Then came Halloween, and their school organized for the kids to be chaperoned for trick or treating. The Egypt Game decided to visit Egypt, while they were walking Toby and Ken (troublemakers from their school and who would soon be one of their best friends) followed them. They scared them but them even more because they decided to join their game. In conclusion, they came up with a lot of ceremonies and games, found out who the "Professor" was and who was the murderer.

The Corn Grows Ripe: Summaries of Chapters

"The Corn Grows Ripe" is a book by Dorothy Rhoads, it is about a Mayan boy named "Dionisio" but everyone calls him "Tigre": jaguar in Spanish. Tigre is actually a lazy boy but a heavy burden is layed on his shoulders, his father is hurt and Tigre has to feed his family. This book is really interesting because it is about Mayas and we will study Mayas in Humanities.

Chapters 1-3:
This book is about a character called Tigre, a mans burden is layed on his shoulders after his father breaks a leg. In the 1st chapter, the book describes Tigre's family and gives background information on him and his family. Also, the book provides us with information about his pets and what his house is made of. Next, the book talks about how Tigre and his father went to make a new cornfield. In conclusion, his father breaks his leg in an accident (a tree fell on his leg) and Tigre has to go to the big village for the bone setter.

Chapters 4-6:
In the 4th chapter, which is called "The Journey" Tigre and his dog travel 17 miles to reach the big village. There, they find the bone setter and the medic goes with them to their village to help father heal. After that, in the next chapter Tigre chops down the last tree, by doing that he made a big space for the cornfield, but he is not bragging about it instead when he comes home he exclaims quietly: "Tzoki!" (It is finished!). In the evenings after his hard work, he comes to Don Alfonso's house to learn all the lessons he had missed and to learn even more! Still, bad fortune remains with Tigre's family: Father's condition doesn't improve. The medic comes regularly but mother and great-grandmother don't think it is worth to give that much chickens and honey away. In conclusion, lots of chickens were killed by a vampire bat, no one knew hot it came through, they thought Mother didn't close the door well enough but one day Tigre went into the chicken coop and found the vampire bat, it was trapped and couldn't get out.

Chapters 7-11:
At first, in the 7th chapter, Tigre prepares to burn the milpa and burns it when it is time to burn. Next, he gets ready for the fiesta (a major celebration in May, which includes bull fighting). He also says that he will make a rope (kids in his village, not all, make a rope to bring the bulls into the arena) because he wants to participate in the "corrida" (bullfight). In chapter 9, Tigre works on his rope but soon finds this activity boring and stops. After some time, he feels guilty and starts to work on his rope again and finds out that when he does activities that are unpleasant for him, his will becomes stronger. In conclusion, he competes in the bullfight and afterward, is really tired.

Chapters 11-15:
In this chapter (chapter 11), Tigre's (his family's) and all the other cornfields are dry because of bad weather (really hot) weather. After that, the men of the village call the medic from the big village to come and tell them what to do. The medic says that they have to pray to the chacs (rain gods) to bring rain. From now on, everyday, people come to the main church and pray to the chacs that rain will come. Also, a ceremony is held to call the chacs and Tigre is 1 of the 4 frogs that take a major part in that ceremony (he croaks and calls the chacs). Finally, clouds come out and rain pours down on the village, after the rain is gone everyone starts planting corn in their cornfields (milpas). In conclusion, Tigre, his dog and his father come to their cornfield and take their well deserved harvest.
